Symptoms of retinoblastoma
The most common sign of retinoblastoma is a white reflection, glare or glow in the pupil when exposed to light, such as in a photograph taken with a flash. This is called leukocoria or cat’s eye reflex.
Other signs and symptoms of retinoblastoma include:
- eyes that are crossed or donʼt appear to look in the same direction (called strabismus)
- redness and inflammation of the white part of the eye (the sclera)
- blurred vision
- eye pain
- squinting
- an enlarged eyeball
- bulging of the eye out of the eye socket (called proptosis)
- irises that are different colours or have colour variation in the same iris (called heterochromia)
- discolouration of the iris due to abnormal growth of blood vessels around the iris
- increased pressure in the eye (called glaucoma) that can lead to blindness
- uncontrollable movement of the eye from side to side
