Parathyroid cancer statistics

Last medical review:

Statistics for parathyroid cancer are not reported separately but are included in the general category other endocrine cancers. This broad category includes parathyroid and similar cancers together. So the numbers do not necessarily show the new cases (incidence) and deaths (mortality) specifically for parathyroid cancer.

It can take several years to collect and confirm cancer data, so the statistics from recent years may not be available for some time. The most recent data available are provided below.

Incidence and mortality

Incidence statistics for parathyroid cancer are not reported separately but are included in the general category other endocrine system cancers. This broad category includes parathyroid cancer and similar cancers together. So the numbers do not necessarily show the new cases (incidence) specifically for parathyroid cancer. Death (mortality) statistics are available for parathyroid cancer alone.

Cancer statistics are currently collected, analyzed and reported based on the sex assigned at birth, with male/men and female/women categories. We need to address gaps in how statistics are collected to better understand cancer in transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse people.

The most recent incidence statistics for other endocrine cancers are from 2022:

  • 535 people in Canada were diagnosed with other endocrine cancers.
  • 245 men were diagnosed with other endocrine cancers.
  • 295 women were diagnosed with other endocrine cancers.

The most recent mortality statistics for parathyroid cancer are from 2023:

  • 5 people in Canada died from parathyroid cancer.
  • 1 man died from parathyroid cancer.
  • 4 women died from parathyroid cancer.
