With an estimated 16,000 Atlantic Canadians diagnosed with cancer every year, our region has the highest incidence of cancer per 100,000 in the country. We’re seeing advances in detecting and treating all types of diseases, but cancer continues to be a significant health challenge for the people in Atlantic Canada. By 2030, the number of cases will be nearly 80% higher than in 2005. Atlantic Canada’s increase in rates is due in part to an aging and rural population and lack of easy access to medical intervention.
That’s why we’re coming together to change the future of cancer in our region. Our Atlantic Campaign will invest $20 million in prevention, support and research programs, building on our 80-year history of supporting Atlantic Canadian families facing cancer. Comprised of the J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund and the Atlantic Cancer Support Fund, our Atlantic Campaign will enhance and sustain programs unique to our region but will also will create a better future for all Canadians.

J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund
As part of the Atlantic Campaign, the J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund will contribute $5 million from now until 2025 to landmark cancer research in our region. J.D. Irving, Limited is generously donating $2.5 million to this fund, ensuring we can invest in more research to better detect, diagnose and treat Atlantic Canadians with cancer.
The J.D. Irving, Limited — Excellence in Cancer Research Fund will support researchers based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. With your help, we can build a strong network of researchers across our region who will uncover new knowledge, treatments and innovations and help transform the future of cancer forever.

Is any parent ever ready to hear the words “your child has cancer”? When a J.D. Irving, Limited employee in Atlantic Canada received the news that his daughter Hannah had leukemia, he was scared and completely devastated. But thanks to advances in cancer research spanning the last 20 years, 9-year- old Hannah received a positive prognosis.
Today, Hannah is a thriving teenager and proof that funding research saves lives. This is her incredible story.
Atlantic Cancer Support Fund
The Atlantic Campaign also includes the Atlantic Cancer Support Fund, which will contribute $15 million to the Canadian Cancer Society’s support system in Atlantic Canada.
Your contribution to the Atlantic Cancer Support Fund will ensure friends and family in Atlantic Canada can access free and flexible support programs, such as our Cancer Information Helpline, travel subsidy program and virtual wig bank. These programs can reduce isolation and provide compassion, information and community to people with cancer – making their cancer journey a little bit easier.
